Anjanadri Hill

A Spiritual Climb with a Scenic Reward in Hampi, Karnataka

Nestled in the quiet village of Hanumanahalli, near the historic ruins of Hampi, Anjanadri Hill is one of the region’s most iconic landmarks. This hill, recently promoted under its traditional name, is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, the monkey god revered across India for his strength, loyalty, and devotion.

Until just a few years ago, most travelers and even locals simply called it the Monkey Temple or Hanuman Temple, thanks to the friendly troops of monkeys that still roam the area and the modest temple perched at its peak. While the government has since started using the name “Anjanadri Betta” (meaning “Anjana’s Hill”—Anjana being Hanuman’s mother), especially in tourism promotions aimed at Hindu pilgrims, the essence of the place remains unchanged: it is a soulful, scenic spot where nature and mythology meet.

Reaching the top involves a climb of about 575 stone steps, but the effort is well worth it. The Hanuman temple at the summit is a peaceful, humble shrine that radiates spiritual energy, and the 360-degree views from the top are simply breathtaking. You can gaze out over the Tungabhadra River, sweeping banana plantations, ancient ruins, and the dramatic boulder-strewn landscape that defines Hampi.

Whether you come for religious reasons, cultural curiosity, or just to watch the sunset from one of the best viewpoints in the area, Anjanadri Hill offers an unforgettable experience. It’s a place where mythology becomes real, history feels alive, and the journey is just as memorable as the destination.
